Abuakwa South Municipal Assembly, formerly East Akim Municipal Assembly, was established as a District Assembly in 1988 and elevated to municipal status in 2008; in 2018 its northern part was carved out to form Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly. It lies in the central Eastern Region of Ghana, covering approximately 210 square kilometers, and borders Abuakwa North Municipal, New Juaben North, Suhum Municipal, Atiwa West and West Akim. The population is 89,051, representing 3.04 percent of the Eastern Region's population, with 47 percent urban and 53 percent rural, and a density of 422.9 persons per square kilometer. The economy is primarily driven by the service sector, employing about 54 percent of the working population.
