Akuapim South Municipal Assembly was carved from Nsawam/Adoagyiri Municipal Assembly in 2012 and upgraded to municipal status in 2020, with Aburi as its capital. It lies in the south-eastern part of the Eastern Region, about 20km from Accra, and is bounded by Ga East, La Nkwantanang-Madina and Adenta to the south, Kpone Katamanso to the east, Nsawam/Adoagyiri to the west, and Akuapim North to the north. According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, the Municipality recorded a total population of 76,922, comprising 48.2 percent males and 51.8 percent females, a 105 percent increase over the 2010 census population of 37,501. The municipality is predominantly rural, with 60 percent of the population in rural areas against 40 percent urban.
