Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal lies in the southern part of the Western Region, with its capital Kwesimintsim about 5 kilometres west of Takoradi and 230 kilometres west of Accra. It covers 54.44 square kilometres, some 0.25 percent of the region, and shares boundaries with Ahanta West to the west, Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis to the south and east and Mpohor to the north. The landscape is undulating and is drained by the Whin and Kansawura rivers and the Butre lagoon. The 2010 census recorded 113,726 males and 118,891 females, with 96.7 percent of residents in urban areas across eleven major communities; craft-related trades employ 28.1 percent of working people and services and sales a further 17 percent.
